How hotels in Uttarakhand can win more direct bookings (and pay less OTA commission)
By AnyInfraTech Team · · Updated 12 Oct 2026
Online travel agencies (OTAs) are useful: they put your property in front of travellers who would never find you otherwise. But commissions in India commonly run from around 15% to over 20% of the booking value, and promoted placements cost more. For a small hotel in Haridwar, Rishikesh or on the Char Dham route, shifting even a few bookings a month to direct can make a real difference.
The goal isn't to leave the OTAs. It's to make sure guests who already know your name book with you directly.
1. Own your Google presence
Most "direct" bookings start on Google. Search your hotel's name and look at what a guest sees.
- Claim and complete your Google Business Profile: correct phone, WhatsApp, check-in times, amenities and a link to your own website
- Upload real, recent photos: rooms, bathrooms, the view, parking, the road in
- Reply to every review, good or bad, politely and quickly
- Make sure your website ranks for your own hotel name, so the OTA listing isn't the first result
2. A website that can take a booking
A beautiful site that only says "call us" loses guests at 11 pm. Your website needs:
- Live room rates and availability, or at minimum a clear rate card
- A booking or enquiry form that works well on a phone
- Online payment (UPI, cards) or a clear pay-at-hotel option
- Exact location and route information: pilgrims on the Char Dham route care about distance to the temple, parking and road conditions
- Fast loading on mobile data in the hills
We cover this in our website development service.
3. Give guests a reason to book direct
Guests will book direct if it's at least as easy and slightly better:
- Best rate guaranteed when booking direct
- Free early check-in or late check-out, subject to availability
- A complimentary breakfast, puja arrangement or local guide contact
- Flexible cancellation
Keep your OTA rates consistent with your contracts, and put the benefit in the extras.
4. Use WhatsApp properly
Most Indian guests will WhatsApp you before booking. Answer within minutes, share a clean rate card and a payment link, and send a confirmation automatically. A WhatsApp automation setup means late-night enquiries get an instant reply instead of going back to the OTA.
5. Get listed where pilgrims search
Pilgrims and families travelling to Haridwar, Rishikesh, the Char Dham and the Kumbh Mela increasingly look for verified stays with real photos and straightforward prices. That's the idea behind Pulp Hotels, our booking platform for the region: verified properties, live prices and pay-at-hotel options, and hotels can list their property with us.
6. Keep the guest after check-out
A guest who booked through an OTA is still your guest once they arrive. Collect their WhatsApp number (with permission), thank them after the stay, ask for a Google review, and invite them back for the next yatra season.
Where to start
If you do only three things this month: complete your Google Business Profile, add a working booking/enquiry option to your website, and set up instant WhatsApp replies. If you'd like help, get in touch.
