Long-tail keywords for tour operators: how to find the searches that book

By AnyInfraTech Team · · Updated 12 Oct 2026

Every tour operator wants to rank for the big phrase, "Char Dham Yatra", "Kerala tour package", "Ladakh trip". Those phrases are dominated by large OTAs, government sites and publishers. A small or mid-sized operator can spend years and never reach page one.

Long-tail keywords are the way in. They are longer, more specific searches with fewer searchers each, but those searchers know exactly what they want, and they're much closer to booking.

What a travel long-tail keyword looks like

Most travel long-tail searches combine a destination with one or more of these:

Modifier Examples
Departure city "from Delhi", "from Mumbai", "from Kolkata"
Duration "4 days", "2 nights 3 days", "weekend"
Traveller type "for senior citizens", "for family", "honeymoon", "group"
Transport "by helicopter", "by road", "with tempo traveller"
Budget "under 20000", "budget", "luxury"
Timing "in May", "2027", "October"

So instead of "Kedarnath tour", think "Kedarnath tour package from Delhi for 4 days" or "Do Dham yatra by helicopter for senior citizens".

How to find them (free methods)

  1. Google autocomplete. Type your destination and pause after each word. Try adding "from", "for", "with" and "in" to see what people complete.
  2. People Also Ask. Search your main phrase and expand the questions box. Each question is a topic for an FAQ or an article.
  3. Related searches at the bottom of Google's results page.
  4. Google Search Console. If your site already gets traffic, the Performance report shows exact queries where you appear on page two or three, your fastest wins.
  5. Your own WhatsApp and phone enquiries. The words customers use when they message you are the words they type into Google. Keep a running list.

One page per real intent

Don't create a separate page for every keyword variation, Google treats near-duplicates as one page and may ignore the rest. Instead, group keywords by intent:

  • "Kedarnath package from Delhi" and "Delhi to Kedarnath tour package", the same intent, one page
  • "Kedarnath by helicopter": a different intent (different product, price and buyer), its own page
  • "Is Kedarnath safe for senior citizens?", an informational question, best answered in an article or FAQ that links to the package

What makes a long-tail package page rank

  • The exact phrase in the title, H1 and first paragraph, naturally, not stuffed
  • A day-by-day itinerary with real place names and drive times
  • Clear inclusions, exclusions and a price or price range
  • Practical details the searcher cares about: walking distances, altitude, best months, what to carry
  • FAQ answers to the questions from People Also Ask
  • Real photos and genuine reviews
  • A WhatsApp button for the question that's always left

Measure it properly

Track each page in Search Console: impressions first, then clicks, then enquiries from that page. Long-tail pages usually start showing impressions within weeks and clicks within a few months. Update a page when it stalls on page two: add the questions people are asking, improve the itinerary, and add internal links from related pages.

Start with ten pages

Pick your three best-selling packages. For each, write down departure cities, durations and traveller types you sell. That's usually ten or more pages with real intent, a better start than one page chasing a phrase you won't win this year.
