Web app or mobile app? How a growing business in India should decide

By AnyInfraTech Team ·

"We want an app." It is one of the most common first lines in a software enquiry. When we ask what the app should do, the answer is usually something like: customers should be able to book, staff should see the bookings, and the owner should see a report at night.

All of that can be an app from the Play Store. It can also be a web application that opens in the phone's browser and sits on the home screen like an app. The web app vs mobile app choice changes the cost, the timeline and how much work it takes to keep running, so it is worth deciding on purpose.

What a web app is

A web app is software that runs in the browser. Your staff open a link, log in and work. Gmail, Google Sheets and most banking dashboards are web apps.

A well-built web app works properly on a phone. It can be added to the home screen with its own icon, it can send notifications on Android, and it loads fast on 4G. To most users it feels like an app. This kind is often called a progressive web app, or PWA.

What a native mobile app is

A native app is installed from the Play Store or the App Store. It is built separately for Android and iPhone, or with a cross-platform tool that covers both. It can use the phone's hardware more deeply: background location, Bluetooth devices, offline sync of large data, tight camera control.

The real differences for a business

Cost to build. A web app is one codebase that works on every phone and computer. A native app needs Android and iPhone versions, plus usually a web admin panel for the office. That is two or three things to build instead of one.

Cost to keep running. Every Android and iOS release can break something. App store policies change. Each update has to be reviewed and published. A web app updates the moment you deploy, for everyone.

Getting people to use it. Customers rarely install an app for a business they use a few times a year. A link they can open from WhatsApp or Google gets used far more often. For staff it matters less, since you can tell them to install it.

Search. Google can index the public pages of a web app. It cannot index the screens inside a native app. If customers find you through search, the web side matters regardless.

When a native app makes sense

Build a native app when one of these is true:

  • Your customers use it every week or every day, like a grocery or ride app.
  • You need deep hardware access: live GPS tracking in the background, scanning devices, Bluetooth printers in the field.
  • Staff work in places with no signal for hours and need to keep working offline.
  • Being in the app store is itself part of your marketing.

When a web app is enough

For most growing businesses in India, a web app covers the first two or three years:

  • Booking and enquiry systems for hotels, clinics, coaching centres and travel companies
  • CRMs and follow-up tools for sales teams
  • Dealer and distributor ordering portals
  • Client portals where customers check status, download invoices or upload documents
  • Internal dashboards for owners and managers

Our own platforms work this way. Pulp Hotels has a guest booking site, a partner portal for hotels and a CRM, all in the browser. ILA Infra runs property listings, logins and enquiries the same way. None of them needed an app store to work.

A sensible order

  1. Build the web app first. Get the workflow right with real users.
  2. Watch how people use it. If customers come back often and ask for an app, or field staff hit real offline problems, you have a reason.
  3. Then build a native app on top of the same backend. The database, logic and admin panel you already have stay the same.

This order means you only pay for a native app once you know it is needed.

Questions to ask any developer

  • Will it work properly on a cheap Android phone on mobile data?
  • Can it be added to the home screen?
  • Who updates it when a browser or OS update breaks something?
  • If we want a native app later, can it reuse this backend?
