WhatsApp Business API in India: what it is, how pricing works, and when you need it

By AnyInfraTech Team · · Updated 12 Oct 2026

If your customers already message you on WhatsApp, you have probably hit the limits of the free WhatsApp Business app: one phone, a handful of people sharing it, and no way to message hundreds of customers without getting flagged. The WhatsApp Business API (officially the WhatsApp Business Platform) is Meta's answer for businesses that need more than that.

This guide explains what the API is, how pricing works in India today, and how to tell whether you need it.

What the WhatsApp Business API is

The API is not an app you download. It is a connection between your business phone number and Meta's servers that software can use to send and receive WhatsApp messages. You use it through a platform (like our own auton8n) that gives your team an inbox, campaign tools and automation on top of the API.

With the API you can:

  • Let several team members reply from one shared number, each on their own login
  • Send approved template messages to customers who opted in: booking confirmations, payment reminders, offers
  • Run chatbots and auto-replies for common questions
  • Connect WhatsApp to your website, CRM and payment links
  • Apply for the verified business badge once you meet Meta's criteria

How pricing works (the short version)

Since 1 July 2025, Meta charges per delivered template message instead of per 24-hour conversation. Templates fall into categories, each with its own rate in India:

Category Typical use
Marketing Offers, announcements, re-engagement
Utility Booking confirmations, invoices, order and payment updates
Authentication One-time passwords (OTPs)
Service Free-form replies when a customer messages you

A few rules matter more than the exact numbers:

  • Replies are free. When a customer messages you, a 24-hour customer-service window opens. Your free-form replies inside that window are not charged.
  • Utility templates sent inside an open window are free too.
  • You pay only for delivered messages. Undelivered templates are not billed.
  • GST is added to Meta's charges, and your platform provider may charge a separate subscription.

Meta revises its rates periodically, so always check the current India figures on Meta's official WhatsApp pricing page before you budget.

When you need the API, and when you don't

Stay on the free WhatsApp Business app if one or two people handle all chats and you rarely message customers first.

Move to the API when:

  1. More than two people need to answer the same WhatsApp number.
  2. You want to message customers first at scale (reminders, confirmations, campaigns) without the risk of your number being restricted.
  3. Leads are getting lost between phones, and you need them in a CRM.
  4. You want automation: instant replies at night, forms, appointment booking, follow-ups.
  5. You need reports: who replied, how fast, which campaign brought bookings.

Getting started without the headache

Going live needs a Meta Business account, a phone number that is not active on the regular WhatsApp app, and message templates approved by Meta. Most rejections come from vague templates, so write them the way you would speak to a customer and state clearly why you are messaging.

If you'd like the setup done for you (onboarding, template approval, inbox, chatbot and CRM integration) that is exactly what our WhatsApp marketing service and auton8n platform do.

Rates and rules in this article reflect Meta's published model as of 2026. Check Meta's official pricing page for current figures.
