How to get more bookings for your homestay in Uttarakhand (without depending on OTAs)
By AnyInfraTech Team · · Updated 12 Oct 2026
Uttarakhand has thousands of homestays: in Mussoorie, Dhanaulti, Chakrata, Kanatal, Munsiyari, Chopta, Harsil and along the Char Dham route. Many depend almost entirely on online travel agencies (OTAs) for bookings and pay a significant commission on every night sold.
OTAs are useful for being found. But a homestay that only sells through them doesn't own its guests. You can build direct bookings alongside them, step by step.
1. Google Business Profile: the most important free step
When a traveller searches "homestay in Chakrata" or "homestay near Kanatal", Google shows a map with nearby properties before any website. To appear there:
- Create or claim your profile, choose the right category (for example Bed & breakfast or Guest house), and verify it
- Add 20 or more real photos: rooms, bathrooms, view, food, the approach road, parking
- Add your phone number, WhatsApp, website, and accurate opening details
- Reply to every review, good or bad, politely and personally
- Post an update every couple of weeks: seasonal offers, snowfall, the apple harvest
2. A simple website with direct booking
You don't need a big website. You need one that loads fast on a phone and answers a guest's questions:
- Room types with photos and prices
- How to reach you: distance from the nearest town, road condition, whether a car reaches the door
- Food: home-cooked meals, vegetarian options, what's included
- Things to do nearby
- House rules and cancellation policy
- A WhatsApp button and, ideally, a way to book and pay online
The website also lets you rank for long searches like "homestay in Mussoorie with mountain view and parking", exactly the guests who are ready to book.
3. Reviews, everywhere
Reviews on Google and on OTAs are what convince a stranger to trust a small property. After every stay, send a short thank-you on WhatsApp with your Google review link. Most happy guests will leave one if you ask at the right moment, on checkout day.
4. Instagram that shows the experience
Guests book homestays for the experience: the view from the balcony, the food, the host, the walk to the village. Short reels of these do more than polished room photos. Post consistently, tag the location, and put your WhatsApp and website link in the bio.
5. Bring past guests back
Your past guests are your cheapest bookings. Keep their numbers (with permission) and send a short message a few times a year: festival greetings, a snowfall alert, an off-season offer. A WhatsApp broadcast on the official Business API keeps this organised and avoids your number being blocked for bulk messaging.
6. Keep the OTAs: but on your terms
OTAs bring new guests who've never heard of you. Use them for discovery, then give guests a reason to book direct next time: a small discount, a free breakfast, or flexible check-in for direct bookings, as your OTA contracts allow.
A one-month starting plan
- Week 1: Complete and verify your Google Business Profile with 20+ photos
- Week 2: Get a simple one-page website with prices, directions and a WhatsApp button
- Week 3: Message your last 50 guests for Google reviews
- Week 4: Start posting two or three reels a week
